There is no middle for honour

I’m watching The Middle. And I have to tell you I realize I despise injustice.
Not for myself but for everyone!
I’m watching with my wife while Frankie and Mike try to help their 3rd grade son do math. They participate in a parental tutorial class but they can’t function in the hostile environment created by the teacher.
I know it’s a sitcom but I hate seeing families in pain.
Parents are just trying to protect their kids.
I mean isn’t that what we’re all trying to do?
In 2009 I quit my comfortable job at Jim Pattison Auto and doubled the mortgage (plus added a few credit lines) so we could buy Alley Kat in order to spend more time with our 3 sons.
Chances are that you’re in your business to provide a better opportunity for your family.
A lot of people will tell you what you should do to be successful in business today.
Not me.
I can only tell you what I do and what works for my business, and helps me provide for my family.
I learned it from my grandfather, who learned it from the Bible.
Treat people the way you want to be treated.
My grandpa, also John de Jong, hid Jews in his attic in World War II.
They were fleeing injustice and persecution. Only, it wasn’t a sitcom, it was a drama on the verge of a tragedy.
Doing what’s right shouldn’t be hard. But don’t you think the lines of right and wrong are becoming blurred?
But here’s what never changed.
Treat people the way you want to be treated…even if you don’t agree with their values.
My grandpa risked his own life (and his family) to hide Jews in his house.
He wasn’t of the same religion.
My grandpa prayed with a German soldier in his house.
He was his political opposite.
My grandpa bluffed his way out of a shootout using church keys in his pocket.
That man was literally his enemy.
My grandpa hired a housekeeper for my grandma who was pregnant with her 4th child, yet had to do the laundry and carry out the poop bucket for the family they were hiding.
He treated both his rivals and his family with respect and honour.
He is my role model. Not perfect, but a model of honour and respect.
Find yourself an honourable mentor.
Do the right thing.
Be an honourable person.
That earns you the right to ask for a review from your clients, because you have been honourable.
Please note…honour and great service do not earn you the right to a positive review…they only earn you the right to ask.
You will get some.
You will NOT get some more.
But I guarantee you this: if you don’t ask, you will get next to nothing!
Honour is everything.
Your reputation is everything.
If you want tools to build your reputation, I’d be honoured if you’d consider our company.
You create the honour, we simply provide the tools for people to record it!
